Lake Trout–Fishing in summer, in short-range depth

Summer Lake Trout Fishing 2

Summer trout fishing means the set of technical performed over the hottest period of the year, when trout act differently than the rest of the year. With the arrival of the heat the water temperature on the top layers aims to raise, in the bottom of the lake temperature is cooler and so more congenial for fishes life.

It is necessary to make a distinction about the dimension and the depth of lakes. In medium-small lakes, 6-8 meters deep, the trout aims to stay at the bottom. In larger lakes, with a 15-20 meters depth, fishes will move through the bottom to look for better waters.

All the sport fishing lakes are the result of previous digging activities, made for the extraction of materials, sometimes even in groundwater. The environmental restoration of those caves gave life to the sport fishing lakes.

Those lakes are continuously powered by fresh water coming from groundwater sources.

Trout in summer prefers to move down to the deepest point of the lake looking for more tolerable temperatures. Your goal is to get the bottom and maintain your bait there, right in the trout favorite place.

The summer short range fishing contemplates drop-shaped leads between 6 and 12 g.

In order to succeed you have to understand how deep you need to go to start catching. The trout stationing depth is calculated by considering how many seconds it’s been from the moment the leads touches the water surface till the moment you start the recovery. You will just need a watch or a chronometer or simply count the seconds. In smaller lakes this operation is more simple and accurate, in larger and deeper lakes, instead, this is more complicated and sometimes useless.

When fishing at a medium- short range, the drop shaped lead is the only lead that allow you to quickly reach the bottom keeping the same height. It is 100% lead material, with no plastic or balsa. You may even use a small bombarda, but it will take longer to dive and tend to surface during the recovery operations, making it slower.

This technique is more frequent in summer when the trout activity and animosity are at the top and so it is possible to looking for fish. In fact the main characteristic of this lead is to keep great depths even when the rod and the reel are continuously stressed.

The drop-shaped lead fishing is now considered very trendy thanks to the numerous sport competitions, taking place in large lakes in northern Italy, where agonist and beginner anglers could appreciate the advantage and the potential of this ballast. You can chose between different shapes and models.

The best rod for the trout fishing has to have a length between 4 and 4.20m with a tip action. Parabolic rods are not suitable for this lead because loads action is reduced by the softness of the rod. The reel is very important too; nowadays there are many different models on the market, with different qualities and prices.

I recommend to prefer a reel with a gear ratio of at least 5:1, but powerful at the same time, with a large spool with a decent line recovery per turn.

With a 10 g drop-shaped lead the terminal line should never be less than 180cm long in order to keep the bait at the right depth. A too short terminal line follows rapidly the movements of the lead and, if you are not enough concentrate, you may easily get out from the area where fishes are. A longer terminal line is not that fast and it won’t move from the fishing area that quickly. The best natural bait for this technique is the greater wax moth. However, when the water is very clear the worm too can be a valid bait, providing an excellent spin even with a low gear ratio.
