Yellowtail and Weever Fishing from the Boat

Weever Fishing 2

Ready for a new fishing session in the beautiful sea of Ischia with the Tubertini team? We have a promising trolling session waiting for us, just the one caught by the same "crew" in the previous day's session.

The boat leaves the port in the direction of the Forio shoal, where, thanks to the fish finder, every single area and every small hole will be carefully analyzed and studied in order to avoid the unsuccessful descent into the water of one of the four precious squids captured the day before.

After reaching an area with a depth of 70 meters, the skipper informs the rest of the crew that the fish finder indicates a double school of baitfishing, one at the bottom and one in mid water. Therefore, two rods are quickly mounted.

The Wave Runner II will be used to make a break in mid water in search of yellowtail. The setting includes a 40-meters rig made from 0.50 mm Gorilla UC-4, a TB 120 SS 180 lb swivel and finally 3 meters of 0.62 mm Neo Pink Fluorocarbon, a fluorocarbon of Japanese origin, resistant, rigid and completely invisible in water, perfect for fishing in salt water.

The rod, intended for mid water fishing, will be triggered with a tandem of mackerel. The two fish will be respectively mounted on two hooks, the 96140 and the 96120 of the Tubertini, through the nose and will be positioned so that the tail of the first is at a distance of one centimeter from the nose of the other. This type of trigger will ensure that the two mackerel will enter into antagonism, thus giving rise to a frantic swimming that will maximize the seductive power although they are small prey.

On the other rod is mounted a lead of 400 grams for fishing on the bottom and triggers the first squid hoping that the terrible sand steenbras do not go undermine it.

Soon the first catch arrives on the rod with which it is fished in mid water and a beautiful surprise is pulled into the boat. Unlike the long-awaited yellowtail, a nice bluefin tuna has been the victim of the tandem of mackerel. Admired the beauty of one of the treasures of the sea, the specimen of tuna is promptly released into the water.

The boat moves in search of a new fishing spot reaching an area that most likely was formed by stones detached from the shoal: a seabed of 80-90 m that rises suddenly in some places, an area of about 300 squared meters.

The rod oscillates under the almost imperceptible touches of the next prey, which is skillfully pulled into the boat: a weever with a brown livery and protruding, sharp teeth. Another splendid marine specimen that is photographed and returned to the sea.

There were few squids at the beginning of the session and even fewer remained when the expert of the Tubertini team decided to trigger it and to lower the rod very slowly to the bottom. Just when the crew was starting to throw in the towel, believing they would have to return to port empty-handedly, the robust stem of the Wave Runner bends under the traction of a fish that could not resist the main bait of trolling: the squid.

With a slight trepidation and a sort of superstition, the patient and tiring recovery begins, which in the end rewards the stubbornness and experience of the Tubertini team. A beautiful yellowtail of 6 or 7 kg is the precious spoils of a wonderful fishing session at sea in the company of an exceptional crew.
